When I upload my photos to Facebook people are always asking the same question. What camera are you using? When I tell them I’m using the iPhone 4S they all ask the same second question. Did you edit the photo in PhotoShop? The answer is no.

I’m using Pro HDR for the iPhone. It’s so easy, even a caveman can use it!

Promoted as the most popular HDR software for the iPhone, it only takes one word to describe the pictures taken when using Pro HDR for the iPhone 4s. AWESOME!

For the uninitiated, HDR photography is where you combine an over-exposed photo with an under-exposed photo. Then the best results of the two photos are merged to create a final third photo.

For a measly $1.99, Pro HDR for the iPhone 4S delivers simple high-dynamic-range tools for novices and experts alike. Pro HDR has two modes – Auto HDR and Manual HDR to balance the color ratio for better pictures.

The biggest issue with using Pro HDR is having to hold still, very still. It takes several seconds to analyze the scene before it takes two pictures. I found it works best if I breathe lightly while it’s analyzing the scene and then I hold my breathe when it takes the two photos. I’ve already taken over 120 pictures with maybe 5% being blurry due to my unsteady hands.

I’m seriously considering purchasing a Flexible Tripod for the iPhone that I found on Amazon. Hopefully the tripod will also work with my GoPro HD Camera.

Like Annie Leibovitz recently said, the iPhone 4S is ‘the snapshot camera of today.’

Wishlist for Pro HDR

• Give me a reset button. Once the app does its thing, you can adjust the final product by adjusting the brightness, contrast, saturation, warmth, and tint sliders. There are times I want to go back to square one. A reset button would be nice.
• Give me Facebook integration. I can save and email my photos at full resolution, but I cannot upload them directly to Facebook. Even though you give up all rights to your photos when you upload them to Facebook (terms of use), I would still like to be able to easily upload a photo to Facebook if I choose to.

I hope to never post a simple image of what I’m having for dinner or any other type of photo where the composition isn’t well thought out. My goal is to learn something from every photo I take.

When most people take a picture they simply place the subject of their photo smack dab in the middle of the frame and then snap the photo. I too was guilty of this. Putting your subject into the middle of the frame is usually not how you will achieve capturing an amazing photo.

The rule of thirds divides a photo into 9 equal parts with two horizontal lines and two vertical lines. The graph above and to the right illustrates this division.

The theory behind the rule of thirds is that when you place points of interest of your photographs to the intersection points or along the lines, it will be more balanced and look more natural to the viewers. It makes use of natural tendency or the human eye to be more strongly drawn towards these intersections rather than to the center of the shot.

Let me show you an example before we go any further. The image below no matter how cute is just an ordinary photo. Nothing amazing about it other than it being a cute little guy named Sonny who is stuck in the middle of a frozen tundra.

Now if I were to crop the image and compose the image applying the rule of thirds, the photo becomes a lot more interesting.

A few things to note about the rule of thirds. Don’t have your subject facing the end of your photo. In the photo above, Sonny is looking left so we composed the image with the main subject of the photograph to the right and leave the empty space in the direction Sonny is looking. Another example can be seen in my panning photography tutorial. The cyclist is moving to the right so we placed him on the left of the photograph and gave him room to move to the right on the picture. In both cases by composing your pictures using the rule of thirds it makes the photo more appealing.

Below are a few more examples of pictures being composed with the rule of thirds being applied. Hopefully the examples below will reinforce this easy to follow photography tutorial on the rule of thirds.

And finally… Rules are meant to be broken. Just because you didn’t compose your photo following the rule of thirds doesn’t mean it’s not a good picture. Play around with the composition of your photos and at all times just be aware of the golden rule of thirds.

What is panning photography?

Panning photography is the horizontal movement of a camera as it follows a moving object.

That was the textbook definition of panning photography. Now I’m going to try and explain it in simpler terms.

When you are panning, you are moving your camera in the direction of the moving object. Here is an example of what I mean. Let’s imagine that we are at a NASCAR event and you are lucky enough to have a seat at the start/finish line. With your body facing the finish line your head is turned to the left to see the cars approaching the finish line. You begin to move your head from left to right (the direction the cars are traveling) until they cross the finish line and then you continue moving your head until the cars head into turn number one. That is panning.

When would you use panning?

When done properly, panning gives you a sense of motion. The trick is to keep the subject tack sharp while giving the viewer a sense of motion. Check out the cyclist below. Had I taken the photo at a fast shutter speed, everything would be stopped at a moment in time. The spokes would be clear, the woods in the background would also be clear depending on my aperture setting. Instead, I was able to blur the wheels, pavement and background thereby giving you a sense of speed from the photo.

3 Tips to Create Amazing Panning Photos

1. Successful panning requires that you have a steady hand and your camera is set to a relatively slow shutter speed.

Not all panning photos will use the same shutter speed. The actual shutter speed depends on the speed of the subject but generally it will be 1/200th or slower. 1/200th if your subject is moving at a high speed, like at a NASCAR event, and maybe as slow as 1/40th of a second if your subject is playing rugby, soccer or football and is running past you.

2. Keep in mind that the faster your shutter speed is the easier it will be to keep your subject crisp.

Especially as you’re learning the art of panning, don’t slow your shutter down too much. Just keep it slow enough to begin to show some motion. As your confidence increases and you’ve got the hang of things, go ahead and slow your shutter more and more to show even further pronounced motion and thus separation of your speeding subject from the background.

3. Make sure your subject remains in the same portion of the frame during the entire exposure: this will ensure a crisp, sharp subject.

When your subject comes into view, fix your lens on them and follow them from left-to-right (or vice-versa), click your shutter as they land on the spot you want to capture them, and then continue to follow the subject until they are out of range. This will ensure that you get their full range of motion and shutter speed, and won’t stop short of your exposure.
